The first thing you need to do is pick the subject that you want to study. For some students, that's simple. For others, it could be more difficult. If you're struggling, think about what you want to be doing when you leave university. What career do you want to get into? Research around what qualifications would be best, and then go from there. Once you know what you study, you can then compile a shortlist of the universities that offer your subject.
Search the rankings
Next, the best thing to do is to look up the rankings. These are easy to search through, so you can filter your results. You can look for universities that consistently put out the best results. That way, you can get an idea of what their teaching is like, and whether they get the results you want.
Look up the culture
Once you have a shorter list of possible universities, you then need to think about what kind of university culture you want. Some, like Oxford, are very close knit and focused on academic activities. Others offer a wider and more varied scene. Where you choose will be very personal to you. For example, do you want to go somewhere with a lively social scene, where you can explore the clubs of a weekend? Would you rather a smaller university, with a good variety of clubs that you can get involved in? It's really up to you.
Distance from home
Of course, if you want to live at home, then this will change the choice of universities open to you. If you live in a large city like Birmingham, then you'll have a lot of choices. Cost
Where you study can have a huge effect on your costs. Studying in London, for example, can cost you a lot more. After all, a pint can cost you at least £5. Finally, look into visiting universities on their open days. You can look around their campuses, classes, and living quarters. You can get a good idea of what it can be like to live and study there, and this will help you make your decision.
